The three C’s of presenting

presentation comic

In our very first Presentation Skills class we discussed the Three C’s of presenting.

They are:

1) Confidence

2) Content

3) Connection

According to our teacher, if you have those three, you have a good presentation. I disagree. I believe there is a fourth C missing: Carry-out. Granted, I’m stretching here, to accomodate the “C” pattern, but essentially I’m talking about how you physically carry out the presentation. Without a good carry-out (ie. execution or delivery) the rest matters little.

Personally, I usually have the original three. When I present, I am knowledgeable about my content, I connect well with the audience, and no one would accuse me of having a lack-of-confidence. However my downfall is in the carry-out.

I speak to quickly, I get over-excited, I move around too much…none of these things are effected by my confidence, content or connection, it’s all about my carry-out. Despite having the original three C’s, without the fourth, my presentations fall flat. In fact, if I allow my carry-out to be poor, it will take away from the other C’s entirely.

Therefore, I believe we should learn the FOUR C’s:

1) Confidence

2) Content

3) Connection

4) CARRY-OUT

  1. Good point. Something to explore deeper in upcoming class discussions!

  2. Hey Lisa,

I love the layout of your blog, very nice.
I’m gonna play the devil’s advocate on this one and say that all of the things you list under carry-out could be toenailed into the first three C’s.
If you’re speaking to fast, moving around too much and getting over excited, you’re not making the most of the connection you developed. You can give it another name if you like, I’d never deny you that. I just like the simplicity of three.

  3. Rick,
I agree with what you’re saying BUT you’re overlooking that you can still be fast, moving a lot, etc, and still have a connection despite improper carry out. It can be exclusive is what I’m saying I guess. UNLESS you’re saying that you don’t think its possible to have a connection if you’re moving/talking fast. In which case, we just have to agree to disagree. :P
